According to Dr. John Asano, your Glendale Dentist, your nutritional dietary habits can dramatically affect your teeth and gums. Of course, oral hygiene habits, such as brushing twice and flossing once each day along with regular dental checkups are vital when it comes to dental care, but so is what you put in your mouth.
Avoid Acid and Sugar
Refined sugar will attack the enamel on your teeth because it forms acid. Even a small amount of sugar, a teaspoon in your coffee, can create acid in your mouth that will last for about two hours. The acid will soften your teeth making them more susceptible to decay. Acidic drinks, such as soda and fruit juice should also be avoided. Limes, oranges, grapefruit, and lemons are also very acidic.
What You Drink Matters
Carbonated beverages, especially sports drinks and soda are loaded with acid, which can cause tooth erosion. Stick with water. Just make sure you don’t add sugar or lemon to the mix. Coffee and tea are other good alternatives, just be aware that tea and coffee can stain your teeth.
Eat with a Meal
Acidic and sugary foods should be enjoyed with a meal as this allows your saliva to neutralize the acids. If eaten with a meal, and not as a snack, sugary and acidic foods have a better chance of being neutralized by your saliva. If you must have a snack, stick with celery, carrots, and nuts.
Brushing
Dr. Asano recommends that you wait to brush after eating or drinking as the enamel on your teeth is much more susceptible to abrasion after acid exposure. The best time to thoroughly remove food particles, acid, and plaque is before bedtime and the first thing in the morning.
Watching what you eat and drink can play a huge roll in your overall oral and physical health as can brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups.
