Spring has sprung and that means it’s time for spring-cleaning, but it’s not just your home that should be cleaned.
If you can’t remember the last time that you had your teeth and gums cleaned, call and schedule an appointment with your dentist as healthy teeth and gums are just as important as the rest of your body.
According to the American Dental Association, you should have your teeth professionally cleaned at least once every 6 to 12 months along with your regular dental checkup. If you have had gingivitis or periodontitis in the past, your dentist may recommend that you come in more often for a professional cleaning to avoid a recurrence of gum disease.
Even if you are meticulous about brushing and flossing, you still need to see your dentist once a year for a professional cleaning. A thorough cleaning is used to remove the deposits, or tartar, on your teeth, that twice daily brushing can’t. Tartar is calcified plaque that, if left to its own devices, can cause pockets in between your teeth and gums. If left untreated that calcified plaque could eventually cause tooth loss. Regular cleaning by your dentist also helps prevent gingivitis and the more serious periodontal disease.
During your professional cleaning your dentist or dental hygienist will use a small blade like instrument, known as a scaler, to get rid of the tartar that has formed below and above your gum line. An ultrasonic vibrating instrument may also be used in order to shake off the loose plaque along with the tartar. Once removed, the debris will be rinsed with water followed by a tooth polish using an abrasive paste.
