School is in session and that means healthy teeth and gums. You may not be able to watch what your kids eat 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but you can make sure that they have healthy snacks and meals at home, and make sure they see a dentist regularly.
According to Dr. John Asano, there are some other things you can do to make sure your kids start school with an A+ on their report card for healthy teeth and gums.
Schedule Regular Dental Appointments
By scheduling regular dental checkups for the entire family, you are paving the way to a life full of healthy teeth and gums. Early tooth decay and gum disease detection is essential for the overall development of your kid’s teeth and gums.
Snack Time
Keep sugary snacks out of the house and opt for lots of veggies. Fruit is okay, but the citrus in oranges, grapefruit, Kiwi, and other acidic fruits can cause enamel erosion. If citrus is enjoyed, make sure your kids drink plenty of water.
Dried fruits may be delicious, but they can wreck havoc on the teeth. Dr. Asano explains that those sticky sweet figs, apricots and dates will stay in the fissures and grooves at the back of your teeth causing bacteria to eat away at the enamel
Avoid potato chips and other starchy foods as they can become stuck between the teeth.
Healthier Lunches and after Practice Beverages
Make mouth healthy lunches and keep the sodas to minimum. Pack celery, nature’s dental floss, carrots, and other tooth friendly foods that will keep your kids satisfied and less lethargic after lunch. Sometimes a heavy carbo laden meal from the school cafeteria can make kids tired.
After soccer and other sporting activities bring lots of water and skip the sports and energy drinks, which are loaded with sugar and carbonated water.
This fall start taking stock of your family’s dental health and schedule a dental appointment for each member of your family. Not only will they appreciate it when they are your age, but so will you.
