Most people understand the importance of good oral hygiene, which includes brushing at least twice a day, flossing, and using a good antibacterial mouthwash. However, according to your dentist a large percentage of people who believe they have good oral health habits aren’t brushing or flossing the right way.
Not Brushing Long Enough
Colgate explains that the first step in good oral hygiene is to make sure that you are brushing long enough. The American Dental Association will tell you that most people are not brushing long enough. Brushing your teeth for 40 to 50 seconds, even if you are brushing twice a day just isn’t enough. Your dentist recommends that you brush for at least two minutes making sure to reach the back molars and the back of your teeth.
Equipment
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush that is the right size for your mouth. Both the shape and size of your toothbrush should allow you to brush all areas in your mouth easily. Replace your toothbrush every four months or more so if the bristles have started to wear or fray. A worn toothbrush will not do a great job cleaning your teeth. Both manual and mechanical toothbrushes get the job done; just make sure you brush for at least two minutes. Use fluoride toothpaste that has been recommended by the American Dental Association.
Brushing Technique
According to your dentist, it is important that you hold your mechanical or manual toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums. Gently move the toothbrush back and forth using short, wide strokes. Brush the inner, outer, and chewing surfaces on all of your teeth. To clean the back surfaces of your front teeth, tilt your toothbrush vertically using up and down strokes. Don’t forget to brush your tongue to remove food particles and bacteria. It also helps freshen your breath.
