You may think you take good care of your teeth by practicing good oral hygiene and scheduling regular appointments with your Glendale Dentist, but if you practice the following habits, you may need an emergency dental visit.
Ice
It may be sugar free, but chewing on frozen ice cubes can crack, chip, and even break your teeth. Chomping on ice can also injure the pulp inside of the tooth. If this happens, you may be subjected to regular, toothaches. Skip the ice and chew a piece of sugarless gum instead.
No Mouth Protection
According to Dr. John Asano, playing any type of sport, including non-contact sports such as tennis or surfing without a custom-made mouthguard can cause serious injury. Without a mouth protection, you could chip, crack, or even have a tooth knocked out.
Oral Piercing
It may be trendy and cool to get your lip or tongue pierced, but biting down on a metal stud or hoop in your mouth can break and crack a tooth. Piercings also cause sores and infections, and can cause gum damage and even tooth loss. Before you get your tongue or lip pierced, talk to your Glendale Dentist first.
Teeth Grinding
Bruxism, or teeth grinding wears down teeth and is often caused by sleeping habits and stress. Teeth grinding can also be caused by TMD. Often hard to control, Dr. Asano recommends a custom-made mouthguard to wear while sleeping as it can help prevent further damage.
Stop Snacking
Keep the Snacking to a Minimum. Constant snacking will produce less saliva than breakfast, lunch, or dinner as it leaves food particles in your teeth longer. Try to avoid snacking too often and eat snacks, such as carrots and celery that are low in starch and sugar.
Binge Eating
Binging and purging, known as bulimia nervosa can damage your dental health, as the acids in vomit will erode teeth making them weak and brittle. Those same acids will also cause halitosis or bad breath. Bulimia can also lead to other serious problems. See your physician if you are binging and purging.
