Frosty the Snowman really does have a dark past and isn’t the innocent that is portrayed in the song or the television series. According to historians, Frosty the Snowman started his illustrious career selling whiskey back in 1890. After prohibition, Frosty’s career was resurrected thanks to several alcohol brands, including Chivas and Schlitz.
Speaking of your favorite Christmas television shows, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer actually hit the scene back in 1939 when Montgomery Ward department store hired a copywriter to help boost business during the holidays. Robert L. May wrote the charming story of Rudolph with his brother Johnny Marks getting into the act as well. Mr. Marks, a songwriter and radio producer loved the story so much that he wrote a song about it. When Burl Ives heard it, he had to record it and did so in 1949. As an interesting note to the story of Rudolph, Montgomery Ward wasn’t too happy about the red nose at first as it suggested that Rudolph might have a drinking problem.
If you think that Santa Claus always wore red, think again. According to Wikipedia, Santa was originally dressed in blue, green, and white until Coca Cola got into the act in 1930. Hoping to boost sales, Coca Cola put Santa in red and the rest, as they say, is history.
